About Us Adoption Center How Can I Help Resources

Our adoption process is fairly in-depth. We take all of the following steps in order to ensure that every dog we take into our group will go to a home as loving as they deserve.

Here are the following steps you will need to take in order to adopt your new companion through Underdog ResQ:

  1. Complete the Adoption Application:
Online applications are the fastest and easiest way to apply.  When you apply make sure to specify which dog you are interested in so that we can send it to that dog's adoption coordinator.   If you would like to mail it in, we have supplied you with a PDF application form that you can download; however, this will slow down the adoption process as we can only check our mail about once a week.

  2. Application Confirmation:
Once we receive your application, we will contact you within 48 hours to verify that we have received your application. If you do not hear from us within this time period, the application may not have come through and you should contact us directly via email at info@underdogresq.org.

  3. Application Review:
We will review your application and may have some questions. We prefer to communicate by email but may ask you to set up a time to chat on the phone.

  4. Meet the Dog:
At any point in the process after the application has been reviewed and the reference checks have been completed, we will introduce you to the dog's foster parents so that you can set up a convenient time to meet.  We prefer that you meet the dog at the foster home where the dog is in a familiar comfortable setting.  Everyone in the household will need to meet the dog, including household dogs.

  5. Home Visit:
If you like the dog and you are a good match, we will set up a date/time for a representative of Underdog ResQ to stop by your house and meet you in person. The visit will take about a half hour (or less) and is to make sure your environment is suitable for a new dog.

Please have proof of ownership of your home handy at this time if you own your home.

  6. Adoption/Transport:
This is the big day! If convenient, we prefer that you pick the dog up from the foster home.  If you live far, we may be able to meet you half way.  This is when we will go over the dog's medical paperwork, your upcoming responsibilities, some recommendations and review of the adoption agreement. We will ask you to sign the adoption agreement and write a check to Underdog ResQ for $250.00 (the adoption fee).  The adoption fee does not usually cover Underdog ResQ's expense for each dog.  Please consider making a donation to Underdog ResQ at this time so that we can help more underdogs.

We love it when adopters keep us posted on how their new dog is doing. We will even contact you to find out how things are going. Pictures and stories help to remind everyone how wonderful dog rescue is.

Questions?
At any point in the process, you may email us with any questions.

Either party, at any point in the process, may decide the dog is not the right match. Not all dogs are the same and some require more care than others.  It is in your best interest and the interest of the dog that you are a good match for each other.  We want this to be a permanent match.

 Common misconceptions
 before adopting a dog:
1. We’re getting Rex for the kids - they will do all the work.

Maybe for the first week or so, but most kids will slack off soon enough and the responsibility will fall on your laps. You are considered to be the owner because you are over the age of 21. If your kids do not walk Rex, then it is up to you that it gets done. As much as we talk to our kids about responsibility and as much as they agree to care for your new dog, we all know that sooner or later most kids will lose interest or get tired.

If you can positively answer these questions and concerns, then you may be ready to adopt Rex.
