pixie's Success Story
Pixie was 5 months old when we met her in a shelter that could not place her due to a lack of an adoption program. Her destiny didn't look very good considering she was a pit bull and she had demodectic mange with extensive hariloss (see photo below). Luckily, one of our foster families with a dog, kids and a cat offered to help her. She was in foster care for only one month before she was adopted in October of 2009.
Here is an update from her family in July of 2010:
We adopted Pixie from Underdog back in October of 2009 and have not looked back once, as you can tell by the lag in the update! Pixie has been an absolute love and quickly became my partner in crime, comingwith me wherever I go and always ready for an adventure.
When we got Pix, she was still battling with Demodex Mange, and I can say it was a tough and long battle but we're finally beyond it with only minimal evidence she was ever effected. It's hard dealing with relapses and seeing how miserable your dog can be, but fear not future adopters, it's a fight worth winning.
Pixie has been the rule when it comes to pit bulls: a politician. She gets along with everyone she meets and has changed the mind of every skeptic she's run into. She's easily the happiest dog in America, whether she's romping around with play buddies, laying around in the grass, or sleeping in with me on a Saturday morning.
I don’t remember not having Pixie and I'm certainly planning on
adopting a sibling pit through Underdog ResQ in the future.

Common misconceptions before adopting a dog: |
|
1. We’re getting Rex for the kids - they will do all the work.
Maybe for the first week or so, but most kids will slack
off soon enough and the responsibility will fall on your laps.
You are considered to be the owner because you are over the age
of 21. If your kids do not walk Rex, then it is up to you that
it gets done. As much as we talk to our kids about responsibility
and as much as they agree to care for your new dog, we all know
that sooner or later most kids will lose interest or get tired.
If you can positively answer these questions and concerns, then you may be
ready to adopt Rex.
